How much does new flooring cost?
It depends on what material you want and how big the square footage is. LVP tends to be on the lower end of the pricing spectrum while solid hardwood and tile is towards the higher end. Simpler layouts also tend to be quicker to install, especially if you have a lot of cabinets or other features that eat into the square footage. We can give you a better idea and send over a quote for consideration within 24 hours of your call.
How long does flooring installation take?
It depends on the size of the job and the material you want. Single rooms tend to be 1-2 days with a whole-house installation running anywhere from a a few days to a week at most. Larger square footages and more complex installations tend to take longer, especially depending on the subfloor preparation needed.
Do I need to move my furniture out first?
It depends on how big the items are. We can usually move smaller pieces ourselves, and larger items can be moved by us and set back up once the flooring is installed. We’ll go over logistics with you ahead of time to make sure everything goes smoothly.
What’s the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is, as the name suggests, made from a single piece of wood, while engineered hardwood has a plywood core with a thin veneer of real wood on top. Solid hardwood floors can be sanded and finished multiple times over the lifespan of the floor while engineered hardwood can only be sanded very lightly and not as frequently. Engineered hardwood has better resistance to temperature swings and is a good option for basements that tend to be more humid than the upper levels of the house. Both are real wood but require somewhat different care and have different durability characteristics.
Is luxury vinyl plank (LVP) really a good material or is it just cheaper fake wood?
It depends on what you’re looking for, really. Good quality LVP isn’t meant to try and pass itself off as real hardwood, but at a distance, it can hold up well and be much more forgiving on a budget. It has better resistance to water and day-to-day scuffs and is generally a good value option for areas where spills are more common, or if you have to worry about pets and kids.
My old flooring may contain asbestos, what happens then?
It’s not unheard of, especially with older vinyl or tile, and it generally isn’t something that can be diagnosed remotely. If we suspect it, we’ll bring it up and suggest asbestos testing be done before removal can happen, as disturbing it is what makes asbestos dangerous in the first place.
Can you install new flooring over concrete?
Yes, with some caveats depending on the material. Concrete can be a stable subfloor, but it’s usually necessary to check for moisture and levelness first, especially with materials like hardwood or laminate that tend to be more sensitive.
Will my new floor blend in with the rest of the house?
We’ll do our best to match the existing flooring if that’s what you want, but keep in mind that it’s sometimes not possible especially with hardwoods as they tend to darken and age differently. We’ll let you know if an exact match isn’t possible and help you explore other options like transition strips.
What happens if our subfloor is damaged or uneven?
We’ll address it, either by repairing the subfloor, leveling the subfloor, or making adjustments to the new flooring so it’s suitable for installation. We don’t hide problems and will always bring issues up so we can fix them together.
Do you offer hardword refinishing services?
Yes, we do. Good quality solid hardwood floors can often be refinished at a lower cost than installing new hardwood, especially if they have good structural integrity. However, there are certain situations like water damage/ stains, structural problems, and heavy cuts that can’t simply be “refinished”. We’ll always advise you of the options based on the condition of the floor.
What is covered under warranty, the material or installation?
Both are separate, with the material having a manufacturer’s warranty and us providing a separate, written warranty for installation workmanship.
Can you install new baseboards and trim installed with new flooring?
Yes. New flooring often requires new or reinstalled baseboards and trim as well, due to the height difference or style inconsistency between flooring and existing trim. We offer either option: using your existing trim or updating the trim as well.
Can you replace or refinish on stairs?
Yes, we certainly can! Stairs are among the most challenging surfaces when it comes to flooring. Each step must be replaced individually, as they are cut to size and shape, so it is not a matter of simply replacing one surface. We typically recommend replacing stair treads rather than try to refinish them.
