How much does it cost to build a deck?
It depends mostly on size and material. Pressure-treated has a lower material cost than many composites but requires more maintenance over time. We’ll visit your jobsite to walk your yard and give you a quote within 24 hours based on your preferences, not a per-square-foot guess.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most decks take a couple days to a week for footings to final boards, depending on square footage and complexity. Multi-level builds or ones with extensive railing details can take longer. We’ll give you a better estimate after your initial visit.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
In most cases, yes, we handle any permits or inspections as part of the build process.
What's the difference between wood and composite decking?
Wood (pressure-treated or cedar) has a lower material cost than composite, but requires staining or sealing every few years to prevent rot. Composite has a higher material cost but requires minimal maintenance aside from an occasional cleaning. We’ll review the pros and cons of each so you can choose based on your budget and preferences.
How deep do the footings need to be?
Deep enough to clear the frost line for our region, so you don’t have to worry about winter heaving.
Do you install railings and stairs to code?
We always build to code on height, baluster spacing and stair rise/run, even on decks that don’t technically require them.
How much maintenance does my new deck need?
It depends on the material. Pressure-treated wood should be cleaned and sealed every few years, while cedar requires similar care to keep its rich color. Composite decking only needs an occasional cleaning. We’ll go over the details with you, depending on the material you select.
Can you build a multi-level deck or one around an existing tree or pool?
We do both frequently. Multi-level decks and decks built around trees or other landscape features simply take more planning to account for drainage and structural needs.
Will the construction disrupt my home or yard for very long?
Not for longer than a week or two. Less than an interior remodel, certainly, since most of the work takes place outdoors in your own yard.
What if my yard isn't completely level?
Not a problem. We’ll plan the build around the natural grade during our site visit.
What's included in my estimate?
Labor, materials and a scope of work including footings and final trim. If you’re trying to weigh the costs for different materials, we’ll go over the considerations for wood versus composite during your consultation.
Will my deck attach to the house, or does it need to be freestanding?
Most decks attach to the house at a ledger board, which is often a weak point if the installation isn’t done right. We always flash and seal the ledger for a watertight connection. If your house isn’t suited to a ledger, we’ll build the deck completely freestanding instead.
